Firesheep is a Firefox extension (.xpi) to sniff out cookies in unsecured wifi networks, and as simple as a double click – it logs you in as that person once it has sniffed out the cookie. I’ve tested it on Wireless@SG and IT WORKS! Firesheep sniffed out a few accounts within minutes of logging into Wireless@SG. So if you think you’re safe, think again.

Please note that I’ve only used Firesheep for testing purposes with no malicious intents but to educate the unaware.

In order to avoid this, use Wireless@SGx instead. I’ve tested it on Wireless@SGx and it doesn’t work on this network because it’s encrypted with a WPA2 Enterprise encryption.

If you’re an iCELL user, go to http://www.icellwireless.net/wsgx/user_guide/ to set up.
If you’re a SingTel/SingNet user, go to http://pas.singtel.com/wsg_connect/ to set up.
If you’re an M1 user, go to http://www.m1net.com.sg/wireless-sg/ssa/downloads.html to set up.

For those interested to check if it actually works, you can download Firesheep for Mac OS X and Windows. It will work for any OPEN networks (not encrypted).

Disclaimer: Please be aware that Singapore’s law is very strict with regards to these kinds of activities which will land you behind bars. I’m not responsible as to how you use this software.

This script would have helped all the presenters of the SEA SharePoint Conference a few days ago before the conference when all of us were setting up our developer machines for SharePoint 2010. Anyway, download it if you are developing for SharePoint. It really simplifies the process.

The SharePoint 2010 Easy Setup Script is a new set of pre-packaged tools that help developers easily get started with SharePoint 2010 development by automating the provisioning of a developer workstation using Windows 7, SharePoint & associated tools.

Written in Windows PowerShell these scripts will install and configure all the pre-requisites & products to get you up and running with SharePoint development.

Additionally the script will download evaluation copies of the products it installs (or use fully licensed product bits you supply), install them either locally or in a user supplied Windows 7 VHD & set that VHD up for duel boot using the Windows 7 VHD native boot feature. It also allows you to configure what products are installed via a configuration file, so you can add or remove products.

All the source is included for your use. If a particular aspect of the setup isn’t right for your requirements then you have the ability to change it. A good example of this might be to configure the SharePoint installation to fit your organizations standard deployment.

Out of the box it will help you install:

  • SharePoint Server 2010 + pre-requisites (Standalone)
  • Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate Edition
  • Silverlight 4 Tools for Visual Studio
  • Expression Studio 4 Ultimate
  • Open XML SDK
  • Visual Studio SDK
  • Visual Studio SharePoint Power Tools
  • Office 2010 Professional Plus
  • SharePoint Designer 2010
  • Visio 2010

Who Is This Book for?

This book is for professional developers who are working with previous versions of Visual Studio and are looking to make the move to Visual Studio 2010 Professional.

What Is the Book About?

The book is not a language primer, a language reference, or a single technology book. It’s a book that will help professional developers move from previous versions of Visual Studio (starting with 2003 and on up). It will cover the features of Visual Studio 2010 through an application. It will go through a lot of the exciting new language features and new versions of the most popular technologies without putting the emphasis on the technologies themselves. It will instead put the emphasis on how you would get to those new tools and features from Visual Studio 2010. If you are expecting this book to thoroughly cover the new Entity Framework or ASP.NET MVC 2, this is not the book for you. If you want to read a book where the focus is on Visual Studio 2010 and on the reasons for moving to Visual Studio 2010, this is the book for you.

You can download a PDF of the book here.

You can download an XPS of the book here.

And you can download the book’s sample code here.

Synopsis:

On a fall night in 2003, Harvard undergrad and computer programming genius Mark Zuckerberg sits down at his computer and heatedly begins working on a new idea. In a fury of blogging and programming, what begins in his dorm room soon becomes a global social network and a revolution in communication. A mere six years and 500 million friends later, Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in history… but for this entrepreneur, success leads to both personal and legal complications. From director David Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin comes The Social Network, a film that proves you don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies.

My View

The Social Network Movie tells an interesting story about how the biggest social network site, Facebook, all started with the break up of Mark Zuckerberg and his girlfriend, Erica Albright. Following the break up, Mark created Face Mesh, a simple comparison of girls pictures gotten from all the schools around the area. It really showcases the innovation, creativity, flexibility, agile mind, and drunkard stupor of how a wasted coder that works wonders while fueled with alcohol, something lacking in our Singapore culture.

After becoming (in)famous, Mark was approached by Divya Narendra and the Winklevoss twins to create Harvard Connection. Mark helped Narendra and the Winklevoss twins, but he soon abandoned their project in order to build his own site, which he eventually labelled Facebook. The site was an immediate hit, and, at the end of his sophomore year, Mark dropped out of Harvard to run it. This reflects the daring genius of starting up, and how it’s not about the idea of creating a social network but the business/marketing strategy of jumpstarting the traction of social usage.

The movie is told from the recollection of his former best friend, Eduardo Saverin, and Narendra and the Winklevoss twins, who are currently suing him. The jumping forward and backwards between recollections might throw the viewer off a little because it wasn’t stated in the beginning, but snuck in during the middle of the movie.

However, the best part of the movie was when Mark moved the entire Facebook operations to San Francisco, California, where he rented a house as his office and hired 2 interns using an interesting hiring process. The interns were required to hack into a system as fast as possible, with every broken rule geared towards getting them to drink as many shots of alcohol as possible. Of course, the office was as crazy of an environment as you can imagine. It showed almost exactly how actual coders work, unlike those we know in shirts and pants in an office cubicle droning away.

Singapore has much to learn from this movie, if it wants to grow its startup culture. For the movie goers, do not expect this to blow your mind, as it is more like a documentary biography with some culture view of how developers/coders think, work, and play. It will get boring at certain parts, and if you can’t appreciate or aren’t interested in the startup culture, then this isn’t a movie for you.

I leave you with this quote from the end of the movie – “You’re not an asshole, Mark. You just try so damn hard to be.”
