I was recently introduced to this new system called Uglii and naturally curiosity got the better of me to find out more about what this new location-based technology does. Here are some of my findings.

What is Uglii?

Uglii stands for Unique Geographic Listing for Industry. Uglii is a new way to find businesses, products and services online. One way to explain what Uglii is is to compare it to existing services you’re probably more familiar with – online search engines. The primary difference between Uglii and traditional search engines relates to the specific nature of the results generated by the Uglii system. Traditional search engines tend to deliver anything and everything related to the original search term. This has two impacts; firstly, it requires a great deal of filtering by the user. Secondly, it makes it very difficult for the majority of businesses to generate an acceptable return from SEO. It’s a well-known fact that users rarely check beyond the second page of search results. Uglii’s structured search results are delivered by an unrivalled encyclopedia of products and services, which includes more than 700,000 definitions.

What is it trying to solve?

The Uglii system aims to improve consumers’ search experience and to help businesses become more discoverable on the Internet. Uglii business, product and service information is map-based and can be listed against the Uglii encyclopedia of products and services. Searches therefore return very accurate results and speed up the business cycle. Businesses can be easily discovered in their local area, or across the world. Directories tend to be narrow in focus, and very expensive in comparison to the benefits derived from Uglii services.

Why does it matter to me?

The Uglii system matters to everyone – every business, household or person who wants to buy products or services in the most competitive and convenient way possible and looks for online resources to make informed purchasing decisions.

How does it help me?

To help individual consumers like you, Uglii provides all the service information required to make an informed purchasing decision. The powerful spatial system locates businesses and persons in map views, allowing you to purchase from the supplier at your preferred location, where required, a geographic search radius can be set as low as 100 meters. You are able to use the taxonomy search processes by business names, brands, products, services, Uglii Brands codes, credentials awarded by third parties. Only results that match the location and keywords will be generated.

How does it help businesses?

To assist all businesses, especially those with limited resources, to optimise online discoverability, Uglii offers them a free online presence and enhances it by creating 40+ affordable add-on services. Businesses can then decide whether to opt for the add-ons and when they want to use them, according to their budgets and business plans.

The Uglii system includes Uglii Find and Uglii Brands, at the time of launch.

Uglii Find – A powerful geographic system, which locates businesses in map views. Users enter the search term for the product or service that they require, and their locality within a specific radius, place name or by free range processes. The Uglii Find system provides the user with specific business results relevant to their location. The system also includes a credentialing process which can be used to verify a business as an official reseller or vendor of a brand.

Uglii Brands – The Uglii Brands System features an encyclopedia containing 700,000 standardized descriptions of generic products and services. These range from consumer related products and services through to B2B and industry specialized products and services. The Uglii Brands System uses the same standard encyclopedia in every economy. Within each economy, Uglii Brands allows brand owning businesses to list their brands and models under the descriptions of products and services in the encyclopedia. Users can search for a generic product or service and easily see all of the brands that provide that product or service. The search results provide useful information such as access to the brand’s website, spatial presentation of the brand’s resellers, credentialing information and much more. The Uglii Brands System also includes a process that allows credentialing, certifications and rankings of products and services by third parties. The Uglii encyclopedia is being translated into many languages which will allow inter-language searching for every economy.

Uglii will roll out additional systems during 2011 including: Uglii Site Cadet – a website development toolset for small businesses; Uglii Classified Ads; and Uglii Marketplace – two systems for facilitating B2B and B2C transactions and trade globally.

Organizations that are interested in joining Uglii can visit www.uglii.com for further information.
