Review of the Sony Xperia Z2 – Improving the previous while retaining some problems

The Sony Xperia Z2, a premium waterproof smartphone, is a minor updates to the existing Sony Xperia Z1 model. These minor updates do not justify an upgrade from the Sony Xperia Z1, however if you’re upgrading from another phone, it is worth taking a look simply because of its solid sturdy aluminum skeleton frame.

The Sony Xperia Z2 physically looks almost exactly like last year’s Sony Xperia Z1, except for the slightly 5.2″ larger screen. Its front and back are flat layers of glass, the core of the phone is aluminium and the three parts are joined with thin buffers of black plastic. The 20.7MP sensor in the camera is also slightly bigger, capable of shooting 4K video and comes with new features.

The Sony Xperia Z2 also offers the best water resistance of all the new top Android phones. A coated headphone jack and the two rubber-sealed ports help the phone earn its IP55 and IP58 certification. This means you can submerge the phone in water and it can take being pummeled with water jets.

Another neat feature you may not initially notice is the set of stereo-front speakers. They output from tiny little near-invisible grilles on the very top and bottom of the Sony Xperia Z2, the top one sharing its home with the multi-colour notification LED.

Otherwise a great phone, the camera takes a few hundred milliseconds to capture the picture, resulting in missed shots or blur images. The 16GB internal storage is too little for me, although you can expand it with an SD card, I find this a downgrade from last year’s phone models. However, Sony isn’t the only manufacturer offering only a 16GB storage this year.

Summary:
+ Very solid sturdy build
+ Waterproof, dust proof
+ Better screen than Sony Xperia Z1

– Camera is very slow, a deal breaker for most people
– Screen lacks vibrancy and not very visible under bright sunlight
– Fingerprint magnet on both sides of the phone

If you’re the kind of person who drops their phone often especially in water and looking for a sturdy trusty phone, the Sony Xperia Z2 is a great phone to get. However, if you already own a Sony Xperia Z1, or will be using your phone for a lot of quick fast photography, you should really look elsewhere.

The Sony Xperia Z2 is available in retail shops in Singapore at a suggested retail price of S$998 (seems to have dropped to S$968 at this time of writing).
