What gadget should I buy for Christmas? Here’s my recommended list for the gadget geeks

So it’s Christmas again, and I felt like doing a list of gadgets I would recommend that will make a great Christmas present for your love one. Ok, not that I felt like it, but apparently I keep getting asked what gadget they should buy. So here are my the list of highly recommended gadgets!

I’ll only pick one gadget from each category for now, and might even add more later. If you have any suggestions on other categories you’ll like to see, let me know in the comments below. Who knows? I will have something in mind to recommend you to buy for your special geek friend. So without further waiting, let’s start with the first gadget.

Apple iMac 27" with Retina 5K Display

1. Desktop – Apple iMac 27″ with Retina 5k Display

Without a doubt, the new Apple iMac 27″ with Retina 5K Display blows the entire competition away with simply the 5K Retina Display. Just try looking closely at the screen and you’ll see how sharp and detailed everything is. Starting at S$3,388, it is definitely not cheap. This is an amazing desktop for anything visual like photography, design and basic video editing, but pushing it to the gaming and advanced video editing/processing limits will require a higher end graphics card which will bump the price up significantly.

Lenovo YOGA 3 Pro

2. Laptop – Lenovo YOGA 3 Pro 13.3″ Ultrabook

The Lenovo YOGA 3 Pro is one of the most versatile ultrabook/tablet/screen that impressed me. Sporting a gorgeous 6-piece watch band hinge design made of 813 precision-machined, hand-assembled components and weighing only 1.19kg, 0.5″ thick a super-sharp QHD+ 3200 x 1800 IPS multitouch display, JBL speakers, 7 hours of battery life… I could go on and on about how amazing this ultrabook is. Priced at S$2,299 onwards, if you’re in the market to get a new Windows 8.1 ultrabook, you can get it at the new Lenovo online store for SG. (psst if you’re planning to get me this, Clementine Orange please! Thanks!)

3. Router – ASUS RT-AC87U Dual-band Wireless-AC2400 Gigabit Router

The ASUS RT-AC87U is the best in class routers out there in the market, packs in one of the fastest processor chip, fastest wireless, furtherest coverage, great for your new 1Gbps fibre internet. It’s not just the hardware, but the features in the software is simply mind-blowing; even being able to load-balance and fail-over two internet connections for really insane people like myself who has two fibre internet lines. The number of features are too many to list here, out of  all the routers out there, this comes highly recommended from me. The ASUS RT-AC87U costs S$399, but trust me when I say the firmware features and hardware justifies the price tag for any power geek.

4. Video Camera – GoPro HERO4

I’ve used GoPro in its early days for mainly video shots that I wanted to have a different perspective, but the quality had always been mediocre, nothing that I will put on a 1080p display. Recently, techielobang showed me a 1080p video that was taken by the new GoPro HERO4 that made my jaw drop. The quality was astoundingly sharp, not fuzzy or grainy like you would expect normally from a small video camera like this. The GoPro HERO4 Silver is retailing at S$550 and the GoPro HERO4 Black (if you’re feeling rich) is S$700.  But hey, if you’re into videography and want a portable alternative view to your perspective, you’ll love the GoPro HERO4.

Sony Alpha A7 MkII

5. DSLR – Sony Alpha A7 or Sony Alpha A7 II

Sony Alpha A7 is the lightest, smallest, full frame DSLR in the market, and still unbeaten. Now that the Sony Alpha A7 II will be coming out in the next week or two, you’ll probably want the shiny new Sony Alpha A7 Mk2 under your Christmas tree. I know there will be others who might say otherwise about the quality of the Sony Alpha A7 series, but hey this is my Christmas list! The Sony Alpha A7 with the kit lens will be retailing at S$2,399 (might drop after the Sony Alpha A7 Mk2 is released), and judging from the pricing in the US, I’m guessing the Sony Alpha A7 Mk2 with the kit lens will be priced at between S$2,499 to S$2,599.

LG G Watch R

6. Smart Watch – LG G Watch R

A smart watch that actually looks like a watch, looks good, yet doesn’t label you as a geek. The LG G Watch R is an instant classic timepiece with the capabilities of all things smart watches do – Notifications – among other things. If you’re looking to getting a watch for your geek friend, the LG G Watch R is an instant hit with the beautiful circular POLED (Plastic OLED), water resistance (1 meter up to 30 mins), and all the other stuff that makes it a pretty tough watch. It also doubles up as one of those fitness trackers. However, please get a proper leather strap rather than the one provided by default. Going for S$398, just remember to make sure he/she has an Android phone.

Creative Sound Blaster Roar

7. Wireless Speakers – Creative Sound Blaster Roar

Portable? Check. Wireless? Check. Roaring sound that brings the roof down? Check. The Creative Sound Blaster Roar is the most affordable, feature packed, booming bass and sharp vocals, wireless bluetooth speakers in the market. Highly recommended and guaranteed to bring THE party to your party, the Creative Sound Blaster Roar is a beast that packs the largest sound punch I’ve ever heard at only S$199. You won’t believe it, but Creative is back at what it does best – producing the best sound quality at an affordable price.

Parraot Zik 2.0

8. Wireless Headphones – Parrot Zik 2.0

Slimmer, slicker, with the same uncompromising sound quality for the discerning audiophile. Music over wireless has never been sound so good until the new Parrot Zik 2.0. It comes with a unique equaliser in an app that allows you to customise your music experience. It comes with everything that the Parrot Zik is known for, but even better. Available at the SG Apple Online Store, the Parrot Zik 2.0 will put you back S$589, but it is money well spent.

Sony PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition

9. Gaming Console – Sony PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition

Only 12,300 units in the world, the Sony PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition is a commemoration of the original Sony PlayStation; in the original grey colour, and with the original multi-coloured PS logo, the Sony PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition is a must have for all PlayStation fans out there. Priced at the same original price of S$689 which includes the PlayStation Camera and released just in time for Christmas, whoever you’re able to get this for Christmas is one lucky person. (Hint – I would like to be that lucky person!)
