It’s been a long time since I’ve written anything about security, and I love watching Leverage TV Series for their various con techniques. The latest episode uses the “Moonwalking Bear” con, is one of the many types of  distraction con by using two cons interleaved together to distract the target by a main con while executing the real con right under the target’s nose without him realizing it.

As seen in the video above, if you concentrate on counting the number of passes the team in white makes, majority of the people will not be able to notice the “Moonwalking Bear” in the background. The same concept applies to this “Moonwalking Bear” con.

In order to make this successful, you’ll need the target to know that both cons are happening, but the distracting con will be the main focus with the knowledge that it will fail, while the “Moonwalking Bear” con will be downplayed in the background happening at the same time.

This is a fairly difficult con to execute because both cons needs to be well orchestrated to interleave with each other, together with providing enough distraction for the target to focus all his efforts on the main con, all the while letting the main con help the real con succeed. Furthermore, the target needs to already know there’s a con happening and wants to beat you at your own game.

Perfect for those who think they are smart enough to outwit you. :)

Alessandro Acquisti from Heinz College, Carnegie Mellon University presented a research on how they could essentially get every private data about you from just your face, with the help of Facebook’s database of images.

The research called “Faces of Facebook: Privacy in the Age of Augmented Reality“, shows how the lack of privacy on Facebook (and other social networks), or rather the lack of awareness and privacy management, can allow anyone including yourself find out about their names, where they live, cell numbers, birthdays, monikers, sexual orientation, credit ratings, social security numbers (or NRICs), even inferring various information – basically everything about you in an instant by just your face.

Combine that with your phone’s camera, Augmented Reality, and cloud computing to crunch and data-mine those data, and I can walk down the street, flash my phone at you and I will know everything about you.

Scary? It’s becoming a reality. It’s only a matter of time.

The LG Optimus 3D takes the smartphone experience into new territory with its Tri-Dual configuration – dual-core, dual-channel and dual-memory – which allows for improved performance when multi-tasking, viewing graphics-intensive websites, enjoying a movie or playing graphics-intensive games. The LG Optimus 3D is also a major step forward in the utilization of full 3D functionality in everyday life – users can record and immediately view content in 3D without the need for special glasses.

The LG Optimus 3D will be available in Singapore at the end August (estimate 26th August) at a recommended retail price of S$938.00 inclusive of GST.

My take? Here are the pros:

  • Best overall smartphone catered for creating 3D content, viewing 3D content, and sharing 3D content.
  • Covers all areas including conversion from 2D content to 3D content.
  • Bundles 3 games and 7 more free games playable in 3D.
  • Automatic realigning algorithm should your stereoscopic cameras mis-align due to drops.
  • Best flicker-free and glasses-free stereoscopic LCD screen, however you need to position the phone and your eyes properly.
And cons:
  • Still running Android 2.2 Froyo, upgradable to Android 2.3 Gingerbread in Q4. But by then, wouldn’t Ice-cream Sandwich be almost out?
  • It’s still a little laggy, but it should be fixed on the final firmware and further upgrades to newer versions.
  • The 3D camera drains a lot of battery, and yes, the battery life is still not that great.
Will you buy the LG Optimus 3D?

ScriptTD is an open source project that allows anyone to easily create a new Tower Defense game for the Windows Phone 7 platform, without any prior programming knowledge by changing settings, sounds, and graphics. These games can then be sold in the Zune Marketplace. Developers can also extend out the engine to handle new features and game styles.

Great for kids to get into game programming on their Windows Phone 7 phones.

The HP TouchPad National Day Promotion is still on until the end of August:

A message from Anonymous, the hacker group that rose to fame by bringing down Sony PSN and other major industry players, is being distributed around stating their next target is Facebook, dubbed Operation Facebook. The reason is to fight for choice and informed consent, which Facebook only provides a false sense of privacy and security.

Do you agree with them and their actions?

Update: Apparently not the entire collective of Anonymous is behind this operation, based on 2 of the many twitter accounts Anonymous has, GroupAnon and AnonOps. It still remains to be seen if it is a hoax or if it will be an actual attack. Mark November 9th on your calendars, because you should be watching closely.
