Nikon D4 and AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G announced, Available in Singapore from February 2012

Nikon just announced the Nikon D4 and their new lens, Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G. The Nikon D4 (body only) will be available in Singapore in February 2012 (estimated) at an estimated price of USD$6,000(++) which translates to about SGD$8,000(++).

First Thoughts:

  • Nikon is concentrating their line on ergonomics, advanced technologies, and improved workflow.
  • I’m quite impressed with their web-browser viewer to enable multiple users to view photos remotely through WiFi (with the new Wireless Transmitter WT-5) or LAN cable (into a WiFi router?).
  • Because it’s a web-browser based, any mobile device can view the photos.
  • Not only that, you (1 user) can remotely control the camera too, enabling you to take a photo, video, adjust the various ISO, aperture, and shutter speed settings.
  • The camera is only 16.2 MP, but all professional photographers know that the megapixels doesn’t matter that much when it’s that high.
  • The ISO rating and sensitivity, however, is very impressive at ISO 100-12,800 with support for ISO 50-204800.
  • It also has a silent mode fast shot at 24 fps at full HD resolution (not video grabs) with a large buffer space (100-200MB I think).
  • The video recording is compressed using H.264 with B-Frames compression at frame-rates of 30, 25 and 24 – AWESOME!
  • There’s also HDMI output mirroring which is great for portable HDMI display viewports for videographers.
  • It also supports a new CF-Card standard called XQD (currently Sony has announced producing the XQD).
  • I think this is a good competitor to the Canon 1DX. But I’m still very confused at the endless menu system of Nikon cameras.

Nikon 1 F-Mount Adapter FT1 is now available in Singapore (with pricing)

The Nikon 1 F-Mount Adapter FT1 is a mount adapter that enables the use of F-mount lenses with Nikon 1 system cameras.  When FT1 is mounted on a camera, F-mount interchangeable NIKKOR lenses*3, manufactured by Nikon for more than half a century, can be used with the Nikon 1 V1 and Nikon 1 J1.  This allows users to enjoy tremendous variety in their imaging expression with the ability to choose the lens best suited to the scene, subject, or their own creative intent from a broad lineup of standard and special-purpose lenses.

The Nikon 1 F-Mount Adapter FT1 is now available in Singapore at a suggested retail price of SGD$339.

Nikon 1 J1 and Nikon 1 V1 will be available in Singapore on 20th October 2011 (today) at the following recommended retail prices:

Nikon 1 V1 w/:

  1. 10-30mm + 30-110mm : SGD$1,549
  2. 10-30mm + 10mm: SGD$1,499
  3. 10mm: SGD$1,369
  4. 10-30mm: SGD$1,299

Nikon 1 J1 w/:

  1. 10-30mm + 30-110mm : SGD$1,249
  2. 10-30mm + 10mm : SGD$1,199

Nikon announced their new line of cameras – the Nikon 1 series – with the launch of Nikon’s first mirror-less cameras – Nikon 1 J1 and Nikon 1 V1. Here’s the no fuss no muss summary of my notes:

Nikon 1 J1 and Nikon 1 V1 (similar features)

  • 10.1 MP wth 2.7 crop factor (CMOS size – 13.2mm x 8.8mm)
  • 73 AF points and auto-switching between phase detection and contrast detection
  • 4 modes
    • Smart Photo Selector
      • Takes multiple pictures and selects best 5 and shows the best selection (with ability to re-choose)
    • Motion Snapshots
      • Takes multiple pictures and piece them together as a video + picture at the end with music
    • Movie Recording
      • 1080/60i at 60 fps up to 20 minutes of recording
      • 1080/30p at 30 fps up to 20 minutes of recording
      • 720/60p at 60fps up to 29 minutes of recording
      • Supports capturing of still images while recording
      • Slow motion movie capture
        • 640×480 at 400 fps up to 5 seconds of recording (playback ~ 1 minute)
        • 320×240 at 1200 fps up to 5 seconds of recording (playback ~ 3 minutes)
