MyCube is a social networking startup based in Singapore. They were founded in late 2009, have 40 employees, and have received significant investment funding. They will be launching their service to the public in June.

MyCube is launching an ambitious internship program where they will be recruiting 30 young people ages 16-25 from 20 countries to work with them at their Singapore office for 6 weeks, from 4 July to 12 August. The internship will provide the selected members with training in company formation, fundraising, product development, marketing, financial management and more. Interns will attend lectures from internet and business experts, work on real-life case studies and new business ideas, and get significant hands-on work experience.

All interns will receive a $3,000 Singapore dollar stipend, free round-trip airfare to Singapore, and paid housing for the six weeks. The top performing intern will receive a $10,000 Singapore dollar grant to further their studies or start their own company, and four runner-ups will have an all-expense paid trip to Ideas Island in the Philippines for one week of brainstorming and relaxation. After the program, interns will become MyCube “ambassadors” to their home country and may attend lectures, conferences and other events sponsored by MyCube, as well as serve as mentors to future participants of the program.

The application deadline is 5 June and they will be contacting those selected by 10 June.

Startup Weekend arrives for the second time in Singapore! For 54 intense hours, participants brainstorm, plan, prototype, and pitch a startup concept.

If you’re technical, think of it as a weekend-long hackathon, sort of like a SuperHappyDevHouse, but held at Microsoft’s premises. If you’re non-technical, (what are you doing on this mailing list?) think of it as a chance to practice Powerpoint. Mentors, speakers, and judges include members of AWS’s tech team, serial Internet entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists.

Details: April 29 – May 1, 2011 at Microsoft @ 22 level @One Marina Boulevard (OMB)

Some FAQ:

Do I have to have an idea for a startup? No. There will be lots of people with ideas, so you can always join somebody else’s team.
What is the time commitment? Friday night from 6pm to 11pm; Saturday 10am to 10pm; Sunday 10am to 10pm.
What does it cost? If you register before April 6, $75 for geeks and $88 for muggles. After April 6 it’s $99.  So register soon.
Who’s facilitating? Last year it was Marc Nager. This year, Joey Pomerenke.
What about food? Meng Weng will be cooking his famous sous vide: eggs for breakfast, roast beef and BBQ ribs for lunch, and oxtail for dinner. In case that turns out to be a total failure, Lau Pa Sat is just a short walk away.

iTwin is a portable device that allows simple and safe data transfer between any two online computers from any location, even when you are overseas. It creates a robust, peer-to-peer, hardware-enabled, AES-256 encrypted connection between the two computers.

Ok, enough of that marketing talk. Here’s my take on it. iTwin is a portable physical device that creates a connection between 2 computers (like a virtual private network) without wires or any complicated setup at all. You don’t have to know the other computer’s IP address, or set up some username and password, or worry about firewall problems.  You just need to plug iTwin in, and you’re connected to the other computer. Possibilities are endless, but right now iTwin is just offering file-sharing. But I’m sure you can see what other possibilities might be. Think of this as a physical cable without the cable. You can do anything with it – like Remote Desktop without having to create a dynamic DNS or knowing the other side’s IP address; running applications located on the other computer; and anything complicated to set up on your PC just to connect both computers.

iTwin is currently sold exclusively online at http://www.iTwin.com starting 10th October 2010 and retail at S$139.00 (inc. GST, excl. shipping) within Singapore. Choose between two beautiful colors – Lime Green and Gunmetal Grey. For customers located outside Singapore, iTwin will start accepting pre-orders via the website.

Currently, iTwin only supports Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 – with Mac OS X support coming in future.

Last week, I attended the SMU TWC (Technology and World Change) Innovation Symposium, which is a student showcase of innovative products and services these students have developed intensively over the past 7 weeks. At the symposium, students pitched their ideas to a large crowd of 300 ranging from working professionals from different industries, professors and their peers. This was followed by a interactive showcase with 21 mini booths, featuring actual prototypes of students, where they were given the opportunity to share their project in detail.

Of all 21 entries, the notables are the W.O.W. Modular Table which is a table that cleans up your clutter by integrating gadget docks, lamps, charging stations, etc. as part of your table to reduce the clutter of wires. The potential for this design is huge, and highly extensible with various devices built modularly for it like a router or other devices. They presented a good pitch, but the possibilities of the idea itself is enough to convince any investor.

Another project I’m impressed with is Segments, a mobile  toiletry storage which you can carry around for travels or to your gym. It integrates a dispenser as part of the storage too. If they change the material from acrylic to something less bulky and can easily fit into a handbag, they have a good thing going. They did a very good pitch and proposed a very sound business opportunity to the investors.

The following 21 projects were showcased:

  • Segments (Mobile Toiletry Storage)
  • Tompang Taxi (Taxi Sharing Service)
  • Recoilable Earphone Cover
  • Sleeping Pillow (Speakers in a Pillow)
  • StoveAlert (Alert unattended stoves)
  • S3 (A fishing line clothes hanger)
  • Perfect Swap (Barter trade website)
  • Kasaella (Extendable Umbrella)
  • KimZhuaTiam (Incense/Prayer items website)
  • u-swivel (Laptop bag)
  • Bliss (3-in-1 milk bottle)
  • Le Luscious (Replaceable-parts Bra)
  • IT (Shoe bag)
  • Wipeout (Window Cleaner)
  • EzDry (Portable Clothes Dryer)
  • Prima Dona (Stiletto+Flat shoes)
  • Customine (Phone accessories with velcro)
  • Feels (Removable Heels + Bendable Shoes)
  • ForeSight (Contact Lenses case)
  • W.O.W Modular Table (Replaceable Blocks Table)
